Point Samson

Cape Keroydren (Not actually in Point Sampson, but hey, it's a great photo!) Name Origin - Michael Samson accompanied Walter Padbury on an 1863 coastal expedition.

This picturesque township is named in honour of Michael Samson, who accompanied the District’s first settler Mr Walter Padbury, on his journey in 1863. In 1910 Point Samson was established as the major port for the Roebourne District. The initial development of Point Samson was largely due to the decline of Cossack as a shipping port, as a result of silting problems in the Tien Tsin Harbour, and the subsequent inability of Cossack to service larger vessels that were then beginning to service the growing population of the Shire. A large commercial fishing fleet still operates out of the town and can be seen at the wharf facilities at Johns Creek.

Today Point Samson’s attractive setting has become a popular beach retreat for locals and visitors alike. Samson now offers a growing amount of accommodation and attractions, with the most famous of these being Moby’s Kitchen, a local fish and chip restaurant renowned for selling the best fish and chips in the North West. Point Samson is also a popular destination as a day trip from Karratha and Dampier.

The beautiful sandy beaches of Point Samson are protected by fringing coral reefs offering good protection for swimming, snorkelling or even a spot of fishing. The tidal rivers of the area contain an immense variety of fish and other sea delicacies including Catfish, Barramundi, Prawns, Blue Manna and huge Mud Crabs.

While fishing from various spots around Point Samson you’ll find Queenfish, Spanish Mackerel, various types of cod and a variety of other good eating fish. For those with a boat, hauls of NorthWest Snapper, Coral Trout and the north’s specialty fish, the Red Emperor can be found.
